FAQ

How do I identify the format of my destination coordinates?

Example of different coordinates formats
Decimal Degrees (WGS84);   X 101.711097   Y 3.15749
Degree, Minutes & Second;   E 101° 42’ 39.49”   N 3° 09’ 26.96”
GPS;                                       E 101 42.658   N 3 09.449

What are GPS satellites and who operate them?

Global Positioning System or GPS is a space-based radio-navigation system consisting of a constellation of minimum 24 satellites orbiting the earth. It is operated by United States, Department of Defense (DOD). It provides users with accurate information on their position, velocity and time in all weather conditions anywhere in the world.

How accurate is GPS?

Prior to May 2, 2000, GPS access by civilian receivers were only able to enjoy an accuracy level of not better than 50 meters due to the so called selective availability (SA), which is inclusion of random timing error in the GPS signals put in by the US military as a security measure.

However, this error was turned off on May 2, 2000 5.05 am (MEZ) because of shortage of military grade GPS receiver and the US department of defense had to purchase civilian grade to make up the numbers. This ensures the civilian grade GPS receiver is accurate to within 20m. However, there are also instances where signal is very weak or disrupted, and then you might get even less accurate positioning.

Why is there a loss of satellite signals?

To pinpoint your location, you need to get signals from at least 3 satellites. In order to get the signals, the navigator must not be in a building, underground car park or in a tunnel. This is because in order to use a GPS device, it must have direct access to sky.

If your device is unable to capture satellite signals, check the following:

  1. is your car windscreen heavily tinted? (tinted beyond JPJ regulation)
  2. is your car's location being hindered by tall buildings or trees?

Will I receive a drop in GPS signal when driving in-city with high rise buildings or under "flyovers"?

There are a lot of reasons why a GPS signal will be less accurate or dropped. The common term for this situation is called GPS errors. There are many types of errors, the errors related to signals dropping in high rise building areas or under flyovers is called the multipath effect. This is caused by signal reflecting off objects such as concrete buildings, mirrors, metals and other reflective materials. Because the signals are reflected and not travelling in a straight line, it takes longer to reach the receiver, hence causing a delay which will be interpreted as a different location by the GPS receiver. In serious cases, signal will be intermittently dropped.

What happens when I drive through tunnel using Lokatoo?

While you may not be able to receive signals while driving in the tunnel, the Lokatoo GPS navigator is able to recapture signals within 5 to 10 seconds upon exiting the tunnel in most cases.

Where is LOKATOO from?

Lokatoo is a local brand with maps powered by Telekom Malaysia (TM).

What are the key highlights of LOKATOO GPS compare to other GPS in the market?

  3. TM has the most comprehensive maps for both Peninsular and East Malaysia covering all city center, towns and even villages.

What if I missed out the turn or route recommended by Lokatoo?

The Lokatoo comes with Intelligent Navigation Software that will instantaneously recalculate the nearest route to your destination once you missed a turn or decides to use an alternative route.

While navigating, the screen shows that my car is hovering, not traveling on any road, why?

There are 2 possibilities:

  1. There are interferences of satellite signals ie. blockage by trees or buildings. The car will be slightly off the traveling road.
  2. The map does not have the travelling road in the database. Please call 1800 88 0308 to inform us in order for the road to be included in the future map updates.

Can I use the Lokatoo to check traffic condition?

No. For the time being, Lokatoo is purely a GPS navigator that provides navigation functions.

I bought a car which doesn’t come with a GPS, where can I buy the GPS?

Please contact the dealer/branch where you purchase the car from or alternatively contact 1800 88 0308.

Does Lokatoo shows us the current speed & distance to desired destination?

Lokatoo displays both the current speed that you are travelling as well as the estimated time to reach your desired destination. Apart from these, it also warns you to slow down if you are speeding.

Why is the navigation not performing according to my route option preference? For example, it still uses "Expressway" even though I had chosen "No Expressway".

The software works based on a set of instructions pre-programmed to choose the route. When “No Expressway” is selected, the navigator will try every possible way to minimize the usage of expressway to reach the destination. If the destination selected can only be reached by using expressway (the only connecting road), the navigator will still make use of expressway even though “No Expressway” is being selected.

How many route options are provided in Lokatoo and what are the differences?

For Navigation Software version 5.5, there are 3 types of route options available as follows:

RECOMMENDED – System will consider various factors such as road class, speed limit, distance and number of turning to construct the best route to destination.

LEAST TURN - System will generate route with minimal number of turning.

SHORTEST DISTANCE - System will generate a shortest distance route.

For Navigation Software version 3.10 and above, there are 3 types of route options available as follows:

RECOMMENDED ROUTE – The navigator will consider all classes of roads and calculate the shortest time needed to construct the best route to your desired destination.

MIN DISTANCE - The navigator will consider all classes of roads and calculate the shortest distance by kilometre to construct the best route to your desired destination.

NO HIGHWAY - The navigator will choose other classes of routes except highway to construct the best route to your desired destination.

For Navigation Software version 2.07, there are 5 types of route options available as follows:

EXPRESSWAY - The navigator will choose expressway as the main route followed by other classes of road to construct the best route to your desired destination.

COMMON ROAD - The navigator will use roads preferred by users (this will be stored by the navigator’s based on route the users prefer to use everytime they navigate) to construct the best route to your desired destination.

MIN. DISTANCE - The navigator will consider all classes of roads and calculate the shortest distance by KM to construct the best route to your desired destination.
MIN TIME - The navigator will consider all classes of roads and calculate the shortest time needed to construct the best route to your desired destination.

NO EXPRESSWAY - The navigator will choose other classes of routes except expressway to construct the best route to your desired destination.

I am using navigation software version 2.07. The navigator is set to 3D mode. Why does the map shows "Rotate Map" even though I have switched it to "Rotate Car"?

The navigation software is programmed in such a way that "Rotate Car" will only work with 2D map. Likewise, 3D map will only work with "Rotate Map". Thus, even "Rotate Car" and 3D mode are selected, the navigator will still run with "Rotate Map". 2D map will however work with both "Rotate Car" and "Rotate Map".

What are the languages preloaded in the system?

For Ver 2.07 and 3.10 & above:
Lokatoo comes with clear voice guidance and interface in 3 languages, i.e. Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin.
